The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday, February 2 added Mayank Agarwal to India’s ODI squad for the West Indies series after confirming that a total of 7 members, including 3 players and a stand-by player, in the Indian camp in Ahmedabad tested positive for Covid-19. India take on West Indies in a 3-match series from February 6 in Ahmedabad following which they will play 3 T20Is from February 16 in Kolkata.
Opening batters Shikhar Dhawan and Ruturaj Gaikwad and middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer are the three players who have tested positive for Covid-19, the BCCI said in a statement. Standby player Navdeep Saini also tested positive for Covid-19.
The BCCI Medical team is handling the positive cases and they will remain in isolation until complete recovery is attained.
“The members were asked to report in Ahmedabad on 31st January 2022 for the upcoming three-match ODI and T20I series against the West Indies. Every member was also asked to undergo an RT-PCR test at home before embarking on their journey to Ahmedabad and the travel was undertaken only after testing negative,” it said.
DETAILS OF COVID CASES IN INDIA CAMP
Opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan and fast bowler Navdeep Saini’s (standby player) RT-PCR tests conducted on Monday (January 31) have returned positive results.
Fielding Coach T. Dilip and Security Liaison Officer B. Lokesh’s RT-PCR tests conducted on Monday (January 31) have returned positive results.
Batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad’s RT-PCR test conducted on Tuesday (February 1) has returned a positive result. He had tested negative during the first round of testing on Monday.
Batsman Shreyas Iyer and Sports Massage Therapist Rajeev Kumar’s RT-PCR tests conducted on Wednesday (February 2) have returned positive results. Both had tested negatives in the first two rounds of testing.
India will be led by Rohit Sharma in both the ODI and the T20I series against the West Indies. The visitors, led by Kieron Pollard arrived in Ahmedabad on Wednesday following their win over England in a T20I series at home.
initially, the BCCI had chosen Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Cuttack, Visakhapatnam and Thiruvananthapuram as the Venus for the ODI and T20I series. However, the board reduced the venues and allocated the ODIs to Ahmedabad and the T20Is to Kolkata to reduce the risk of Covid-19 infection among the camp.
The Gujarat Cricket Association earlier this week confirmed that fans won’t be allowed to watch the matches from the stands at the Narendra Modi Stadium due to the Omicron threat in the country.
However, the Cricket Association of Bengal said that Eden Gardens will have a maximum of 70 percent attendance for the T20I series.
