India’s U-19 World Cup-winning players to be rewarded with Rs 40 lakh each by BCCI

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday announced cash rewards for the U19 World Cup-winning Indian team after they outclassed England in a hard-fought final at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Saturday.

Led by Delhi boy Yash Dhull, India chased down 190 with 4 wickets and 14 balls to spare to be crowned the U19 World Cup champions for a record-extending 5th time. India rode on fifties from vice-captain Shaik Rasheed and Nishant Sindhu and a 5-wicket haul from all-rounder Raj Bawa to emerge successful on the big day in the West Indies.

Soon after India claimed victory in the big final, BCCI secretary Jay Shah took to social media to announce cash rewards for the players and the members of the support staff. Each player will get Rs 40 lakh while the members of the support staff are set to get Rs 20 lakh.

“I’m pleased to announce the reward of 40 lacs per player and 25 lacs per support staff for the U19 #TeamIndia contingent for their exemplary performance in #U19CWCFinal. You have made India proud,” Jay Shah said in a social media post.

The BCCI secretary also congratulated the efforts of the Indian team, which was badly hit by Covid-19 during the group stages of the tournament.

India did not have their captain Yash Dhull and vice-captain Shaik Rasheed for a couple of matches after they contracted Covid-19. Nishant Sindhu, who led the team in their absence, later contracted Covid before returning to the knockout stages of the tournament.

India were unbeaten in the U19 World Cup 2022 as they hammered Australia by 95 runs in the semi-final before edging past a spirited England side in the final.

CASH PRIZE SMALL TOKEN OF APPRECIATION: SOURAV GANGULY

Meanwhile, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly sent his wishes to Yash Dhull’s side, saying the cash prize announced by the BCCI is a small token of appreciation.

Taking to social media, former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, a multiple World Cup winner, congratulated the Indian team.

India reiterated their status as the most successful team in the U19 World Cup, winning the title for the 5th time. Yash Dhull follows an illustrious list of captains — Mohammad Kaif (2000), Virat Kohli (2008), Unmukt Chand (2012), Prithvi Shaw (2018) — who have tasted success in the showpiece event in the past.

Raj Bawa, the grandson of Tarlochan Bawa – a member of the 1948 Olympic Gold-medal winning hockey team, became the first India bowler to pick up a 5-wicket haul in the final of a men’s ICC tournament as his fiery spells helped India restrict England to 189 in 44.5 overs despite winning the toss and opting to bat on a good batting pitch in North Sound.

Ravi Kumar, who is likely to be part of the Bengal Ranji Trophy squad, shone with the new ball, removing in-form opener Jacob Bethell and captain Tom Prest in his first two overs. England struggled to recover from the setback as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals.

Nishant Sindhu, who led India when captain Yash was out with Covid-19, was unbeaten on 50 as he helped India past the finish line despite England fighting hard with late wickets.
