PM Modi attacks Congress, promises ‘Nava Punjab’ in first rally since security scare

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday promised a ‘Nava Punjab’ in his first rally in the poll-bound state since the security scare in Ferozepur last month.

Addressing a rally in Jalandhar, PM Modi said, if given a chance, the NDA will deliver a ‘Nava Punjab’ or new Punjab in the next five years. “I want to dedicate the next five years in building the Nava Punjab which will be free of debt, corruption, and drugs,” he said.

This was Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first rally in Punjab since the security scare last month when his convoy was blocked by protesters on a flyover for 20 minutes.

In Monday’s rally, PM Modi said that the security situation in the state had since not improved. He told the public that his request for security during his visit to a temple was denied by the state government.

“I wanted to offer prayers at Tripurmalini Devi Shaktipeeth after this event but the administration and police said they would not be able to make the arrangements. This is the situation of the government here. But I will surely offer prayers at Shaktipeeth soon,” PM Modi said.

Attacking Congress in his speech, the prime minister said that the incumbent government was being remote-controlled by a family in Delhi. He claimed that governments in all Congress-ruled states were working under orders from the Gandhi family.

PM Modi accused the Congress high command of interfering in Punjab government operations to the extent that Amarinder Singh had to leave the party.

“The state governments ruled by Congress are operated by remote control by a family sitting in Delhi. They kept interfering till they interfered so much that they even removed Capt Amarinder Singh,” he said.

PM Modi’s Punjab campaign

After Monday’s rally in Jalandhar, PM Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit other regions in Punjab like Malwa, Doaba, and Majha on February 16 and 17. The PM will address a rally in Pathankot on February 16 and another one in Abohar on February 17. The election in Punjab for 117 assembly seats will be held on February 20.

BJP manifesto for Punjab

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) manifesto, released on Saturday, promised a slew of sops for various sections, including 75 per cent reservation in all government jobs for youngsters from the state, and unemployment allowance, and 35 per cent reservation for women in government jobs .

An unemployment allowance of Rs 4,000 per month will be given to all graduates for two years after the completion of their degrees, the poll manifesto said.

A special law will be enacted to deal with the cases of brides abandoned by NRI grooms, the manifesto said.

The party’s manifesto for the Punjab polls says a dope test will be mandatory before filing nominations for elections.

The BJP is contesting the Punjab polls in an alliance with former chief minister Amarinder Singh’s Punjab Lok Congress and the Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa-led Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt).

In the 2017 Assembly polls in the state, the Congress had won an absolute majority by winning 77 seats and ousted the SAD-BJP government which had been in power for 10 years.
