A special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court on Thursday sent underworld fugitive Dawood Ibrahim’s brother Iqbal Kaskar to judicial custody for 14 days. He has already been under judicial detention since February 18 in a money laundering case.
Iqbal Kaskar is being probed by the Enforcement Directorate for extorting a builder.
In the five-page remand copy submitted by the ED in the court, the probe agency claimed that after Kaskar was deported to India, he started extorting money from various builders or celebrities by pressing them with the help of his brother’s image as a global terrorist . Kaskar used his henchmen for this act and collected money on behalf of Dawood Ibrahim.
The ED claimed that they had evidence in their possession that Kaskar was regularly receiving substantial proceeds of crime from Dawood Ibrahim.

The remand copy stated that Kaskar had received a flat and Rs 90 lakh as extortion money.
The remand copy stated, “It may be appreciated that the accused has played a very crucial role in the acquisition of proceedings from the act of extortion/other illegal activities. Considering the offense and the role of the accused in the offense of money laundering, as brought out above, the accused may kindly be taken into judicial custody as the investigation is still going on.”
Granting the request, the special PMLA judge sent Kaskar to 14 days’ judicial custody.
Kaskar’s lawyer, Sultan Khan, filed an application to state that Kaskar’s signatures were taken by the ED officials on papers that were in English and Kaskar cannot read or write English, so whatever he signed during ED custody should not be binding on him, stated the applications.
