HIGHLIGHTS

  • Russian troops are 30km from Kyiv: UK
  • UN says invasion has displaced 50,000 Ukrainians
  • India is also evacuating its citizens from Ukraine via Romania

Ukrainian and Russian forces have been engaged in a fierce fight since President Vladimir Putin ordered his troops to invade the neighboring country on February 24. Russian troops are closing in on Kyiv, with the British defense ministry saying that they are barely 30 km from the centre of Ukraine’s capital city.

Many Ukrainians have heeded Presidents Volodymyr Zelensky’s call to pick up arms and defend their sovereignty. The United Nations, however, estimates that the Russian invasion has displaced at least 50,000 Ukrainians who have been forced to flee the country.

Satellite images now show long queues of residents trying to cross the border into neighboring Romania. The distance between Kyiv and the Romanian border checkpoint is approximately 600 kilometers.

All of the following satellite images are dated February 26, 2022.

These satellite images, provided by space firm Maxar Technologies, also show traffic jams with rows of cars and trucks moving towards the Siret border crossing. One image shows a 6.5 km-long traffic jam on the route leading to the Romanian border checkpoint.

Romania, in fact, is also at the center of India’s attempts to evacuate its citizens stranded in Ukraine. The Indian Embassy in Kyiv is coordinating rescue efforts to bring Indians to Romania through road transport.

On Friday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) posted a video of the first batch of evacuees from Ukraine reaching Romania via the Suceava border crossing.
