Responding to PM Modi’s comments on the Congress party and Jawaharlal Nehru during his speech in Parliament earlier this week, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said she was surprised that the prime minister was still “stuck in the past”.
“We are surprised why PM Modi is still stuck in the past,” she told India Today in an exclusive interview, even as the first phase of polling in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election was underway.
“He’s been the PM for seven years, why doesn’t he talk about that? Why doesn’t he talk about the future? He should say how many jobs have been created in these seven years. He should talk about the number of people , who had come above the poverty line under the Congress, but have slipped below it again now under the BJP,” she said.
Further, she added, “Everyone knows what Nehru has done for this country and its independence. If you want to erase history, do it. But the truth will come out.”

In the Lok Sabha on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said“You keep complaining that I don’t take the name of Nehru ji enough. Today I will only talk about Nehru ji. Enjoy.”
“Pandit Nehru said from the Red Fort that sometimes war in Korea can impact us and so price of commodities increase in India. The first PM of the country was helpless – how the country’s first prime minister threw up his hands in front of the country, “PM Modi stated.
ON COVID LOCKDOWN
Attacking the Congress during his speech, PM Modi claimed the opposition party had instigated migrant workers to leave cities during the first Covid-19 lockdown in 2020. “They even provided tickets for the migrants to go from Mumbai to UP and Bihar. You created a ruckus, you violated the lockdown norms and pushed migrants into trouble,” he said.
Reacting to these allegations, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said on Thursday, “So he accepts that we bought tickets to help the migrants. What should we have done? Left them at the mercy of God like the government did when they were walking long distances to their homes? What was the government doing at that time?”
“We helped those people who desperately required help. You [BJP] implemented a lockdown in a day without a warning, leaving them to suffer. There were no buses or trains – what would they have done? And you stayed in your PM house and didn’t think of them,” she added.
‘UNEMPLOYMENT IS BIGGEST ISSUE IN UP’
Speaking exclusively to India Today, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi said that unemployment was the biggest poll issue in Uttar Pradesh. “Thousands of posts are lying vacant. Even the exam system is not clean today. In our manifesto, we have explained how we will increase jobs if voted to power,” she said.
Attacking the ruling government, she said it had done nothing for small and medium enterprises. Instead, “it has sold big PSUs to its two friends,” she said.
“This election is for you and your problems, including poverty, inflation and unemployment. Vote on these issues,” Priyanka Gandhi advised the electorate for the UP polls.
