Russia declares ceasefire, to open corridors for civilian evacuation from Kyiv, Sumy, 2 other cities today


Russia will hold a ceasefire and open humanitarian corridors for civilian evacuations from Ukraine’s Kyiv, Chernihiv, Sumy and Mariupol from 10 am Moscow time (12.30 pm IST) onwards on Tuesday, Moscow’s envoy to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said.

Earlier on Monday, Russia had declared a ceasefire in Ukraine’s capital city Kyiv and three other cities – Mariupol, Kharkiv and Sumy – to come into effect at 10 am Moscow time (12.30 pm IST). The Russian army also announced the opening of several humanitarian corridors in Ukraine.

It has become something of a pattern now. On Saturday and Sunday too, Russia declared brief ceasefires in different cities in Ukraine to allow civilians to evacuate. However, both times, Ukrainian officials said the evacuations had to be halted due to unabated shelling and ceasefire violations.

INDIA URGES RUSSIA, UKRAINE TO ALLOW EVACUATIONS

on monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken to both Ukraine President Zelenskyy and Russia’s President Putin over the phone. During his conversations, he brought up the issue of safe evacuation for Indian students stuck in war-torn Ukraine’s Sumy. About 700 Indians, mostly students of medical colleges at Sumy State University, are stranded in the city in Ukraine’s northeast at present.

According to government sources, Vladimir Putin had assured PM Modi of all possible cooperation in the safe evacuation of Indians from Sumy.

At a United Nations Security Council meeting on the Ukraine-Russia was on Monday, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN TS Tirumurti said that a humanitarian corridor for the safe evacuation of Indian students stranded in Ukraine’s Sumy had not been opened despite India repeatedly urging both Ukraine and Russia.

He said, “We’ve reiterated our urgent demand for safe passage for all civilians, including Indians. We’re deeply concerned that despite our repeated urges to both sides, a safe corridor for our students in Sumy didn’t materialize.”

Russia declared war on Ukraine on February 24 and has been launching strikes across the nation ever since, leading to several hundred civilian casualties and a massive refugee crisis.
