In an important development, the central government has given the Haffkin Institute in Mumbai permission to manufacture the anti-coronavirus vaccine Covaxin from Bharat Biotech.

Last month, Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray demanded that the Mumbai-based Haffkin Institute be allowed to manufacture the Covid-19 vaccines. PM Modi had responded that all institutes in different states that can manufacture the vaccines are encouraged.

Maharashtra CMO said Thursday that CM Uddhav Thackeray thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for accepting his request and allowing the government to start large-scale vaccine production in Maharashtra.

The April 15 letter of approval to Secretary General Sitaram Kunte states that approval was given in accordance with the recommendation of the Committee of Scientific Experts and that Covaxin is set to develop over a year period.

The central government said the Haffkin Biopharma Corporation should start production as soon as possible, given the current growth rate of Covid-19 infections and the demand for vaccines, as well as the appointment of experienced and trained technicians.

Prime Minister Uddhav Thackeray also asked the Secretary General to appoint a senior executive who will monitor the project regularly and finish production on time.
