Bengaluru: Karnataka HC orders probe into BBMP bed scam

After that is claimed Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials took bribes In order to allocate private hospital beds for Covid patients in Bengaluru, the Karnataka Supreme Court has now ordered an investigation into the matter.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the state government to immediately form a team of police officers, including the cyber wing, to investigate the case. A senior officer from the Indian Police Service (IPS) will oversee the investigation.

The additional State Advocate General clarified that a team of officials had already been appointed to investigate the case. Two senior police officers are currently overseeing the investigation, added the additional Advocate General.

Bribe

The alleged bribe fraud surfaced when BJP MP Tejasvi Surya alleged on May 4 that there were “problems with irregularities and anomalies in booking BBMP beds for Covid patients”. Surya said BBMP officials blocked hospital beds with fake names to make money, while Covid-19 cases across the state had increased.

As soon as a bed is booked, it is blocked according to the system for 12 hours. If the patient is not admitted to the hospital by then, the beds are automatically unlocked.

According to the claim, within those 12 hours, officials would find a patient willing to pay a heavy price for the hospital bed and once it was unlocked they would reassign it to the same patient.
