Fear looms in this Raebareli village as Covid spreads and medical apathy grows


When the second wave of Covid-19 hit the country, the virus has now spread to the villages. In the village of Sultanpur Kheda in UPs Raebareli, 17 people who showed symptoms of Covid died in one week.

Sultanpur Kheda, a small village in Rae Bareli with 2000 inhabitants, is inhabited by 500 families. Deaths had become frequent here in the past few days. Every other house lamented the death of loved ones. India Today hit zero and found that the entire village is now locked. Currently, 26 people in the village are positive.

The 26-year-old Indrajit Sahu Kumar lost his father Ramsajivan Sahu (50 years) to Covid-19. He said his father had the symptoms and after a week his situation started to get worse. He took him to the government hospital. But his father was not treated in time and succumbed to the virus.

Another family lost two of their closest ones within three days, Avdhesh Gupta lost his life fighting Covid. He was not given a hospital bed or oxygen supply at the CHC center. The deceased’s wife, Poonam Devi, said his condition worsened due to late medical assistance. Another member also lost the fight against Covid because oxygen could not be provided in time. She said it was a huge shock to deal with after losing two tight ones in such a short time.

Umesh Kumar, 29, shared his experience with the oxygen shortage in the health centers where most people die because the health administration does not support them. He lost his 65-year-old mother Chandra Kali to Covid because she couldn’t get oxygen in time and took her last breath at home gasping for breath.

He said people are afraid of the situation in the village because of the lack of health facilities.

The villagers are disappointed with the lack of medical support. Prashant Shukla, 24, who lost his 50-year-old father, Rakesh Kumar Shukla, to Covid, said he died within a day when his condition began to worsen due to breathing problems. He recounted his ordeal of medical apathy in the hospital.

Kamla Devi, the deceased’s wife, said she never expected her husband to die because he was in good shape. But the lack of medical facilities, she said, led to his death. When questioning the hospital treatment, she claimed that most patients died after being injected with medication.
