Goa’s oxygen crisis claims 74 lives in four days, officials claim logistical issues behind deaths

At least 13 other patients died at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in the early hours of Friday morning, the day after 15 coronavirus patients died in the same facility in Panaji.

Thirteen people died in Goa hospital between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. on Friday after oxygen levels in the Covid community fell again, according to reports.

With 74 dead so far in four days due to a drop in oxygen at GMCH in Goa, the state authorities continue to blame “logistical problems” for the deaths.

The nightmare started on Tuesday when 26 patients died, 20 on Wednesday and 15 deaths at GMCH on Thursday. The Goa Medical College and Hospital or GMCH is the largest facility in Covid. Coronavirus updates on May 14th

Committee of inquiry to complete the investigation in 3 days

The state government appointed a committee on Friday to inquire about the current problems with the oxygen supply in Goa’s top hospital.

The three-person committee will review the adequacy of GMC’s oxygen supply, determine the efficiency of the oxygen supply chain, examine the process of administering oxygen at GMC and make recommendations for its improvement, and recommend improving the entire oxygen supply chain at GMC.

The committee was asked to complete the investigation within the next three days. The Minister of Health was also asked to provide the committee with the necessary assistance in completing the task in a timely manner.

Deaths may have occurred due to logistical problems: HC officials

The Bombay High Court was told Thursday that 15 Covid-19 patients had died at GMCH in the early hours of Thursday.

The HC Goa bank said that some of the victims may have occurred due to “logistical issues” related to connecting oxygen cylinders to the manifold (group of large gas cylinders) that resulted in an interruption and a pressure drop in the oxygen lines to the patient.

The HC found that despite its order to provide medical oxygen to Covid-19 patients at the GMCH, there were 15 deaths in the dark hours.

The bank heard a series of petitions about the recent deaths of Covid-19 patients at GMCH, allegedly due to a lack of medical oxygen.

The HC said the center should ensure that the allocated quota of medical oxygen is made available to Goa at the earliest, which reports a very high rate of positivity for testing.

On Wednesday, the HC said the availability of medical oxygen for Covid-19 patients at GMCH was grim and urged the state government to take corrective action.

As of May 2, 2021, that is the position of victims in the GMCH, the bank said, referring to the deaths during the dark hours.

The court asked the government to remedy any deficiencies in the patient’s oxygen supply.

“We expect the state administration to find ways and means to solve these logistical problems so that precious lives are not lost due to inadequate oxygen supply to patients,” the court ruled.
