Mumbai saw the arrival of this year’s southwest monsoon on Wednesday with heavy rains lashing parts of the city and its suburbs. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and the neighboring districts of Thane, Palghar and Raigad.
Heavy rains for most of the day resulted in Waterlogging in parts of Mumbai, up to the blocking of roads and railroad tracks. In a notice on Wednesday, Mumbai police urged residents not to leave their homes unless necessary and to avoid traveling to flooded areas.
The western suburb of Santacruz recorded 164.8 mm of rain in six hours from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., according to IMD. Similarly, Colaba recorded 32.2mm of rain in south Mumbai on Wednesday over the same period.

As the heavy rain subsided on Wednesday evening, scores of people were seen leaving their vehicles and walking back home.

The IMD has already issued an “orange alert” for various districts, including Mumbai, for the next four days.
In the meantime, a “red alarm” was issued for Raigad for Thursday, followed by an “orange alarm” for the next three days.
The latest satellite observations indicate that Mumbai and its suburbs are very likely to experience light to moderate rainfall, with the possibility of occasional heavy rainfall over the next three to four hours.
Day 1 of the Mumbai monsoon in 10 points:
1. After heavy rains that hit parts of Mumbai on Wednesday, there was massive traffic noise along the Eastern Express Highway.
2. Mumbai Police used Twitter to warn commuters of waterlogging in Netaji Palkar Chowk, SV Road, Baherambaug Junction, Sakkar Panchayat Chowk, Neelam Junction, Govandi, Hindamata Junction, Iqbal Kamani Junction, Dharavi Restaurant, Dharavi, Sion Junction and King Circle .
3. In some cases, the authorities have had to use cranes to clear the streets where motorists had abandoned their vehicles due to waterlogging.

4th The subways of Milan, Khar, Andheri and Malad were closed to motorists due to waterlogging of up to 60 cm at these intersections, said the Mumbai traffic police. A senior official told PTI News Agency that traffic was smooth on SV Road, Linking Road and Western Express Highway.
5. Water accumulation in parts of Mumbai forced officials to suspend suburban trains from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to Thane and Vashi in Navi Mumbai. Floods have also been reported on tracks near Sion and Chunabhatti stations on the Central Railway Route.

6th Mumbai’s Mayor Kishori Pednekar complained that the BMC was “not receiving support from the railways as expected” on the issue of clearing railway tracks after rainfall.
7th Local traffic was discontinued on the main line of the Central Railways between CSMT and Kurla, CSMT and Thane and between CSMT and Vashi (port line). Local traffic remained active on the Trans-Harbor Line and the BSU. Shuttle services from Thane to Karjat and Vashi-Panvel were also in operation. A spokesman for the Westbahn said there was no impairment on the western railway line due to the heavy rain.

8th. BEST buses are one of the safest ways to travel during a rain shower and have also been rerouted on a number of routes to avoid flooded roads.
9. Maharashtra Prime Minister Uddhav Thackeray visited the disaster management room at BMC headquarters on Wednesday to take stock of the situation. He was briefed by City Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal about the situation on the ground and the measures taken to contain a disaster.

10. With the IMD forecast for the next five days on the Konkan coast, up to 15 National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) teams are deployed in the coastal districts of Maharashtra.
