Teacher arrested for sexually abusing students at govt-aided school in Tamil Nadu’s Ramanathapuram

Following complaints of sexual harassment at several educational institutions across Tamil Nadu, another case has emerged at a state-sponsored school in Mudukulathur, Ramanathapuram district.

The defendant, a school teacher, was arrested following a complaint from a student.

The defendant, who was employed by the school as a science teacher, allegedly took students’ cell phone numbers under the pretext of coaching them.

The complainant stated that he would then call her and speak inappropriately and ask the students to come to his home for special classes. The student who filed the complaint stated that the defendant would threaten to lower his score or fail if someone refused.

An audio clip of the science teacher talking to a school girl and forcing her to come to his house, stating that many students have done this before, went viral on social media, shocking parents and causing outrage .

The defendant was arrested by Mudhukulathur Police and arrested under the Child Protection from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO). Further investigations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government has announced guidelines such as an advisory board, dress code and school safety audit to ensure the protection of students from sexual violence.
