A worrying Delta sweep puts unvaccinated people at higher risk

India recorded 39,796 Covid-19 infections on Sunday, bringing the number of new cases below the 50,000 mark for eight consecutive days. The country’s seven-day moving average of new cases per million also fell from the second wave high of 283.5 on May 8 to 27.5 on July 4.

Regardless of the falling number of cases in India, the rise in infections in some countries such as Iran, Iraq, Russia, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand is cause for concern.

Genome sequencing in most of these countries the mutations were largely attributed to the delta variant. In Indonesia it is even 92.4 percent.

First identified in India last autumn, the variant, also known as B.1.617.2, has spread to at least 85 countries around the world, according to the World Health Organization.

Last week, WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described Delta as “the most communicable of the variants identified so far”.

In Russia, Bangladesh and Malaysia, 89 percent, 75.5 percent and 85.7 percent of genome sequencing cases are associated with Delta, according to GISAID, a global database of genetic information about the virus.

THIRD WAVE looming?

Meanwhile a Report from SBI Research said a third wave could hit India next month and peak in September 2021.

“According to the latest data, India can see about 10,000 cases in the second week of July.

However, cases could rise in the second half of August, “the report said.

UNVOCCULATED PEOPLE AT HIGHER RISK

According to US surgeon general Dr. Vivek Murthy, unvaccinated people are at higher risk due to Delta.

“This is a serious threat again and we are seeing it spread among unvaccinated people,” he told CNN last week.

In India, only 6.45 billion people have been fully vaccinated so far, according to government figures. According to official figures, around $ 35 million has been administered to the world’s second most populous country since the vaccine was launched earlier this year.
