Cabinet expansion likely: PM Modi to hold crucial meet with ministers today

Amid rumors of an expansion of the Cabinet expected to take place this week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold an important meeting at his residence on Tuesday.

The meeting will include Interior Minister Amit Shah, the national president of the BJP, JP Nadda, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and other top ministers and party leaders.

Union ministers Dharmendra Pradhan, Narendra Singh Tomar, Prahlad Joshi and Piyush Goyal will also attend the meeting on Tuesday, sources said.

Sources on Monday said the cabinet addition is likely to take place this week.

Sources said PM Modi held several meetings with Amit Shah, JP Nadda among other senior ministers and BJP leaders about the expansion of the cabinet.

Key allies like JD (U) and the Paras faction of LJP are likely to join this expansion, sources said, adding that there is likely to be a reallocation of portfolios as well.

Some BJP MPs from Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh could also be included in the cabinet expansion, sources added.

On June 30, Prime Minister Modi addressed his Council of Ministers and asked them to prepare facts and figures to counter the allegations made by the opposition. “The comment could be an indication that the prime minister is seeking a rejig after the meeting,” the source said.

Sources say the cabinet reshuffle, once it takes place, will not only be a governance exercise for the remaining three years of Prime Minister Modi’s term in office, but will also send out a political signal by keeping the regional representation eye on upcoming polls. “It would be a medium-term course correction by the prime minister,” one minister told India Today.

According to information from India Today, the Prime Minister can have a council of 81 members, while Prime Minister Modi’s cabinet currently has 53 ministers. Sources say PM Modi could fill some of the 28 vacant positions in an effort to improve the government’s administrative and political footprint.

Sources said the prime minister could make just over 20 changes in his council. “The changes may include new drafts, sending leaders from government to party and vice versa, and redistributing portfolios,” a leader told India Today.
