Industrialist and former chairman of the Bajaj Group, Rahul Bajaj, passed away at his home in Pune on Saturday at the age of 83.
in on interview with India Today In 2016, Rahul Bajaj and his son Sanjiv shared how they built their empire, discussing their family’s role in the freedom struggle, and what they envision for the future.
Rahul Bajaj had even quoted Aamir Khan’s movie ‘3 idiots’ to say, “If you don’t have the passion, the fire in your belly, you ain’t gonna reach the top.”
He went on to reveal a few interesting stories about his life, including the time he used to travel to his first job — a distance of around two hours — as a trainee on a scooter because his father had refused to give him a car and he did not want to travel by bus. And in a role-reversal, he did not allow his son Sanjiv to take a car to his first job either.

Asked if he had gotten into trouble for speaking his mind, Rahul Bajaj said, “I have never gotten into trouble but I may have annoyed a few people during my 30s and 40s.”
Notably, in November 2019, at an event in Mumbai, Rahul Bajaj spoke about the BJP government’s “stifling of criticism”, among other things in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and Union minister Piyush Goyal.
Rahul Bajaj was awarded with the third-highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan, in 2001. He also served as a Rajya Sabha MP from 2006-10.
