Snowfall in high reaches of Himachal, most roads blocked


The majority of roads in the higher elevations, including the city of Shimla, have been closed to vehicular traffic since Thursday morning due to the snowfall, police said.

The cold snap, which had intensified in Himachal Pradesh, saw snowfall in the state’s high and middle hills on Friday, while the low hills and plains received rain, the meteorological department said.

The majority of roads in the higher elevations, including the city of Shimla, have been closed to vehicular traffic since Thursday morning due to the snowfall, police said.

The lowest temperature in the state was -6.9 degrees Celsius in Keylong, while the highest was 14.8 degrees Celsius in Una, the local weather bureau said.

In a travel advisory, police said that after continued snowfall in Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Sirmaur, Mandi and Shimla districts, most roads in those areas have been either closed or partially open since Thursday.

In a separate statement, Shimla Police urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel.

In an emergency, use safer alternative routes and contact 01772812344, 112 or the nearest police station if you have any problems, she added.

Most roads in Shimla city are closed due to slippery conditions, police said.

Roads in Kufri, Narkanda, Khidki and Kharapathar are also closed due to significant snow accumulations, he added.
