With less than a week to go before the first round of voting, political activity has picked up steam in the five election-bound states.

Voters in 58 constituencies in Uttar Pradesh will cast their votes in the first phase on February 10th. Key battles in this phase include Kairana, Shamli, Muzaffar Nagar, Hastinapur, Meerut, Baghpat, Ghaziabad, Noida, Mathura and Agra.

Likewise the choice of Uttarakhand‘s 70-member Legislative Assembly and goaThe 40-member Legislative Assembly of will be held in a single session on February 14th. Then the voting takes place Punjab on February 20th. Manipur will vote in two phases on February 27th and March 3rd.

The count of votes cast in all five election-bound states will take place on March 10.

Uttar Pradesh

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath submitted his nomination papers on Friday to contest the general election from the seat of Gorakhpur Urban. In his affidavit, Yogi Adityanath declared assets worth Rs 1.54 crore. The BJP leader held a public meeting before submitting his nomination and later addressed a virtual “Jan Chaupal” alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Meanwhile, Samajwadi party leader Akhilesh Yadav and Rashtriya Lok Dal leader Jayant Chaudhary have been booked for allegedly flouting Covid norms during a rally they held in Noida the previous day . “This election is about brotherhood versus BJP,” Akhilesh Yadav said during a news conference on Friday.

The Congress party has published theirs poll anthem for Uttar Pradesh. The song titled “Tu hai gazab, UP” is set to the melody of the popular song Srivalli from the Telugu film Pushpa.

Punjab

The ruling party in Punjab, the Congress, said it would nominate its prime ministerial candidate on February 6th. Congress leader Harish Chaudhary told reporters in a press conference that the announcement would be made by Rahul Gandhi. Navjot Singh Sidhu, Chairman of the Punjab Congress, on the other hand said India Today in an exclusive interview that the party could reach the majority with 70 seats if it makes the right choice regarding its CM face.

The Congress also welcomed Akali Dal leader S. Darbara Singh Guru, a close associate of Parkash Singh Badal, to the party.

Delhi CM and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national leader Arvind Kejriwal sent a video message to the people of Punjab urging them to give his party “a chance” to form the next government. “I will not ask for votes next time if we are not able to do a good job once we come to power,” he said.

Uttarakhand

The Uttarakhand BJP had to cancel a virtual rally by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, citing “bad weather”. Party leader Devendra Bhasin said arrangements had been made at 56 locations in 14 Almora congregation segments to accommodate 1,000 people each. Bhasin added that the event will be postponed soon.

Meanwhile, Congress Chairman Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to address public gatherings in Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar districts on February 5.

Manipur

Popular Manipuri actor RK Somendro (Kaiku) joined the BJP on Friday.

The Congress Party, on the other hand, published its manifesto at the Congress Bhavan in Imphal. “It is a manifesto for the survival and revitalization of Manipur and to get development back on track,” said Congress President Jairam Ramesh.

goa

Goa CM Pramod Sawant conducted a door to door campaign at Amona and Virdi in the Sanquelim constituency. He also prayed at Shri Siddhivinayak Devasthan in Sanquelim on Friday.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was speaking at a public meeting in Sanquelim where he said the struggle in Goa is between Congress and the BJP. “The rest of the political parties are not in the running… so don’t waste your votes voting for another political party,” he appealed to voters. Rahul Gandhi also administered a “pledge of allegiance” to Congressional CFP candidates.

Interestingly Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut, whose party is also running in Goa’s elections, told a Marathi news channel on Friday: “The Congress Party will emerge as the largest single party in Goa. The (ruling) BJP will not gain a decisive advantage in these elections.”

The Aam Aadmi Party, which is also campaigning, announced Eight point action plan for the welfare of the Scheduled Tribes (ST) in Goa.
