Moscow has reacted sharply after a prominent US Senator called on Russians to assassinate their President Vladimir Putin as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine entered the ninth day.
The Russian Embassy has demanded that Washington officially explain and condemn Senator Lindsey Graham’s statement about Putin, RIA News Agency reported. The Russian ambassador said that the senator’s words were unacceptable and outrageous.
The rebuke comes after Senator Graham shot off a tweet asking Russians to carry out a Julius Caesar-style assassination of Vladimir Putin.
“Is there a Brutus in Russia? Is there a more successful Colonel Stauffenberg in the Russian military? The only way this ends is for somebody in Russia to take this guy out. You would be doing your country — and the world — a great service,” the Republican lawmaker wrote.

The references were to Julius Caesar, a Roman general who was assassinated by close confidante Marcus Brutus; on the other hand, Colonel Stauffenberg, a German army officer, had attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler during the second World War.
Acknowledging that what he advocated was “easy to say, hard to do”, Graham told Russians: “Unless you want to live in darkness for the rest of your life, be isolated from the rest of the world in abject poverty, and live in darkness you need to step up to the plate.”
The only people who can fix this are the Russian people.
Easy to say, hard to do.
Unless you want to live in darkness for the rest of your life, be isolated from the rest of the world in abject poverty, and live in darkness you need to step up to the plate.

Vladimir Putin is at the receiving end of global condemnation and strict sanctions after he ordered a “special military operation” in Ukraine on February 24. In the ensuing devastation, nearly a million Ukrainians have fled the country, while thousands have lost their loves. Major cities like Kyiv and Kharkiv are being shelled and bombarded as the invading Russian forces press their advance to seize control of Ukraine.
