MP Police books Congress leader Kamal Nath for ‘spreading panic’ with Covid remarks

Former Madhya Pradesh Prime Minister Kamal Nath has been booked for alleged panic over the Covid-19 pandemic. At the police station of the criminal investigation department in Bhopal an FIR against the congress leader was registered.

The case against Kamal Nath was registered on the basis of a complaint from BJP leaders, including MLAs Vishwas Sarang and Rameshwar Sharma. Among the complainants was the BJP District President of the BJP, Sumeet Pachouri.

Ramji Shrivastav, superintendent of the Bhopal police, said the applicants had submitted two videos in a pen drive allegedly by Kamal Nath spreading disinformation.

The videos show the former prime minister saying at a press conference in Ujjain on Saturday, “Corona, which has spread around the world, is called the Indian variant of the virus.”

Such statements from Kamal Nath, who is also the opposition leader in the MP assembly create confusion and defame the country internationally, said the complainants. They also accused Nath of violating WHO guidelines, claiming that his actions constituted an uproar.

In addition, the complaint said Kamal Nath made “false accusations” against the Madhya Pradesh government, accusing them of hiding the actual number of Covid deaths in the state.

Kamal Nath has been booked under Section 188 of the IPC (Failure to Respect Duly Proclaimed Order) and Section 54 of the National Disaster Management Act 2005 (Setting off a false positive about a disaster or its severity, causing panic).

The Indian government issued one earlier this week Advice for social media platformsand asked them to remove all content, mentioning the “Indian tribe” of Covid-19. The WHO has made it clear that a virus strain cannot be named after the country in which it was first discovered, according to the report.
